Homeownership is one of the most significant decisions a family can make and everyone deserves a real shot at it, whatever their starting point. S.H.I.E.L.D. created the HomeStart program to help families clear the single biggest hurdle to buying a home; the down payment.
We believe owning a home is one of the surest ways to build lasting financial security. HomeStart is built to make that step possible not with fine print and surprise costs, but with a clear path, genuine homebuyer education and support from approved lending partners who know the program inside and out.
A built-in benefit. Once you're eligible, the approved partner offers a no-point, no-lender-fee refinance so you can improve your loan down the road without paying discount points or lender fees to do it.
All potential homebuyers must complete the Grant Application Form to be approved for the grant (speak with your lender). We proudly support those seeking down payment assistance, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance at homeownership. As part of our process, homebuyers are required to register for and complete an online HUD Education Course if applicable, provided by our trusted affiliates. Upon completion, participants will receive a HUD Certificate of Completion.
There's no cost to check your eligibility or to apply. A one-time program reservation fee is collected about five days before closing only after your file is fully approved. It locks in your grant and confirms your loan is funding, protecting you from assistance that doesn't come through at the closing table. Please note that the grant reservation cost above will be applied to S.H.I.E.L.D's administrative and operational expenses, allowing actual donations to be fully directed toward supporting our vital initiatives.
